Download most recent brochure Over the past three years the Yuba Historical Society has led scores of hikes into the Buttes for weekend adult groups and weekday school field trips. We conduct these outings for two major reasons. First to show folks the incredible beauty and diversity of the Central Valley’s only mountain, but also to increase awareness that the Buttes as we know and love are under threat. That threat level increased substantially on December 4, 2007. I was quite fortunate to grow up in the small town of Live Oak, a few miles east of the mountain. My father still describes a short family outing into the Buttes in the spring of 1958. Parking our black 1951 Oldsmobile alongside West Butte Road and Pass Roads my parents let my brother, sister and I loose to romp amongst the boulders of the Buttes. My dad was taken by how particularly excited I was being there. That four-year-old's excitement of visiting the Buttes for the first time stays with me today. My enthusiasm is not unique. The thrill that visitors receive as they join us on excursions through the Middle Mountains motivates us to continue our work of providing low-cost high quality hikes. Yet not everyone sees the Sutter Buttes the same way as we do. Throughout the 2000s, Sutter County government approved the splitting of three square miles of the Sutter Buttes into 20 and 80-acre lots, some of these parcels now have out-of-place homes plopped onto them. In December 2007 Sutter County supervisors approved another one and a half square miles of additional subdivisions. This time the Yuba Historical Society fought back with a lawsuit. Now the Yuba Historical Society is challenged with raising $25,000 by October to pay our legal expenses. Take to time to read through the attached brochure below explaining the situation and the benefits a financial contribution will bring for the preservation of this California Icon. The Sutter Buttes are at a crossroads. Now is the time to act to stop the trend of suburban development. Please consider making a contribution by sending your check written to the Yuba Historical Society today. Make a note that it is for the lawsuit. Let us know if you wish to be publicly recognized. And please phone me at my residence if you have any questions. With your assistance we can achieve a successful court case that will change the direction of the Sutter Buttes from suburban sprawl towards a future of preserved ranchland, open space and parks.
