From researching Sumatran Tigers in Indonesia to assessing harm wind generators cause to migratory raptors in California's Altamont Pass, Shawn Smallwood possess wide-ranging knowledge in all aspects of biology. On this moderately easy walk we focus on the birds of the Sutter Buttes. Taking full advantage of the varied habitats of Peace Valley we will stroll alongside a riparian stream looking for the uncommon Lawrence's Goldfinch, observe raptors while strolling an open savannah, spy upon birds taking a bath in a year-round spring draped with festooning grapes and observe Canyon Wrens as they work the crevices of Cat Rock in search of insects. We will also keep an eye out for Bald Eagles that annually makes Peace Valley home during the cool time of year. The cost of this hike is $15 for YHS members and $25 non-members, for children 12 years old and younger $5/$10.
